“There are moments in our lives that we don’t realize are important until we take the time to look back. Meeting André, for me, was one of those times. In 2010, I was a 40-year-old woman who had recently decided that she was going to change her life and “become healthy”. Really, what I wanted was to lose a lot of weight! But that really wasn’t anything new since I had been overweight my entire life. According to my husband, this was just like the other times. Don’t get me wrong, he was supportive, but he had also seen the many cycles of fad diets and crazy exercise routines that would last a few weeks before I would lose interest and go back to my old ways. What he didn’t know what that this time I was about to meet someone who was going to make all the difference. I walked into the local gym knowing only two things; one, that I knew nothing about exercise and being healthy and two, that I needed help. Little did I know that I would be introduced to the best trainer of all time. I know this may seem a bit over the top, but meeting André has absolutely changed my life! I was extremely lucky to be introduced to him a few short weeks into my journey. I didn’t know then what an impact he would have on me achieving the one thing I could never do on my own: stick to something for longer than four weeks. It didn’t take long before André was able to find my motivation and create in me a level of excitement for exercise that I had never had before. It helped that he always had a story about a recent encounter or a new adventure to talk about. I always looked forward to our sessions together. Little did I know that these stories, including how he met his beautiful wife, would become the narrative of my weight loss journey. Distracting me from the pain of 100 squats, 100 box jumps and 100 lunges; coaching me to achieve my first real push up; motivating me to go from a walk to a job to running my first ever 5k race, Spartan race and Mud Hero. Through all of that, André shared his passion for life, his love of people and his enthusiasm for exercise. It was absolutely infectious and it gave me the energy I needed o reach my 88 lb. weight loss goal. So at this point, you are likely thinking what an awesome trainer he must be and I would agree wholeheartedly! But there is so much more. Throughout the past eight and a half years, not only was André my personal trainer, but he was also my nutritionist, my career counsellor, my physiotherapist and my personal psychologist. He helped me through some great highs and several crazy stressful moments, layoffs, crazy bosses and two significant career changes. Through it all, I knew that I had a place to go where I was not the boss; a place where I could turn my brain off knowing I was in good hands. But the one thing I will never forget is the support André gave me when my mom was dying of cancer. Throughout it all, André was patient, supportive and compassionate. He offered me a shoulder to cry on and a punching bag to hit; and he actually knew when I needed which. I am forever changed because of the time I spent with André. So today, I leave here knowing a few more things than I did eight years ago. I know the difference between a hammer curl and a bicep curl. I know that I love Russian twists and planking and that I absolutely hate burpees (thanks André for learning that very fast). But the two things that I know without a shadow of a doubt is that André is an amazing coach, motivator, mentor, and friend, and that I will miss him very much! André, thank you for everything that you have done. I am forever grateful.”
